Building Permits

Building permits ensure that all construction and development within the Rural Municipality of Griffin meets safety standards and zoning regulations. Whether you’re planning a new home, an addition, or an agricultural structure, obtaining a permit helps protect property values, ensures compliance with local bylaws, and promotes responsible growth in our community.

Building Permits in the RM of Griffin

A building permit is required for most construction, renovations, and development projects in the Rural Municipality of Griffin to ensure safety, compliance with zoning regulations, and proper land use planning. Before starting your project, review the requirements below and submit your application.

When is a Building Permit Required?

A permit is required for:
✔️ New home construction
✔️ Additions or structural changes to existing buildings
✔️ Garages, decks, and sheds over a certain size (e.g., 100 sq. ft. – confirm with RM regulations)
✔️ Commercial or industrial developments
✔️ Agricultural buildings (barns, grain bins, etc.)
✔️ Demolitions, relocations, or major renovations

A permit may NOT be required for:
❌ Minor repairs and maintenance
❌ Fencing (unless specified by zoning regulations)
❌ Small sheds or storage buildings below the size limit

If you're unsure whether your project requires a permit, please contact the RM Office before starting construction.
